Censer–shaped pottery from the Nakamichi site

Cultural Heritage/Japan Heritage
Along with the Oonitan site, the Nakamichi site is a central site in the area around the source of the Chikuma River. The incense burner–shaped pottery excavated from the site features a design showing a woman cradling a baby, with a burning candle in her womb. Just like the obsidian that was equally distributed among the people for use in everyday life, this piece speaks to us about the desire of the people in the village to connect their lives together and the values held dear by Jomon society.
