Oiwake site

Historic Site/Japan Heritage
Six sites in strata spanning a depth of 5 meters and covering time periods from the Paleolithic age to the Jomon period have been discovered at the Oiwake site, which is located at the entrance to the Takayama obsidian source site cluster. It is clear that this site played an important role as a relay station for obsidian distribution. The stone tools discovered in the deepest stratum date back 30,000 years, and obsidian made in the Shinshu region has also been discovered in equally old sites in the Kanto area. Obsidian is Japan's oldest "brand" and was widely distributed from the earliest known times.
