Hoshigato Obsidian Mines

Historic Site/Japan Heritage
Hoshigato obsidian mines are located at the eastern side of Mt. Hoshigato in the Kirigamine Highlands. Excavation projects revealed 193 mines from the Early (c. 5,000?3,500 BC) and Final (c. 1,700?400 BC) Jomon periods. The geoscience analysis of obsidian across a broad area tell that the obsidian from Hoshigato mines were delivered to distant places in the Tohoku to Tokai region as far as 300 kilometers from the mines. The mining site was designated a National Historic Site in 2015.
