Nakappara Site (Nakappara Jomon Park)
Historic Site/Japan Heritage
Nakappara is a settlement site from the Middle to Late Jomon Period (c. 3,500?1,700 BC), which has been well-known since the very beginning of the modern era, appearing in a publication from 1924. The rescue archaeological excavations relating to agricultural improvements from 1992 to 2001 revealed over 200 pit dwellings and 3,300 pits. The “Masked Goddess” clay figurine (designated National Treasure of Japan in 2014) was discovered in one of the pits. A part of this site was preserved and developed into Nakappara Jomon Park.
