Nagawa City Ancient History Center
Museum/Experience program
This small museum was established in 1992 and is located alongside Daimon River in which the Jomon Period village sites that managed obsidian mines are concentrated. The archaeological collection of this museum includes Takayama Paleolithic Obsidian Workshop Sites and Onitan site of the Middle Jomon Period (c. 3,500?2,500 BC). The patterns of pottery vessels found from those sites indicate interactions with distant areas, such as Hokuriku (Japan Sea coastal area), Kanto, and Tohoku regions. While viewing first-hand a varied and diverse collection of real Jomon pottery, up to 80 visitors at a time can also join a “Jomon” pottery-making workshop.
