Nagawa Ancient History Experience Center

Museum/Experience program
This is a small museum located on the Daimon River, which is a river that ran through Jomon-period villages that operated obsidian mines. Nagawa Town is located on the Sea of Japan side of a mountain divide containing an obsidian-producing mountain. Items of pottery found in this town include not only local Jomon pottery from the south-western foot of Mt. Yatsugatake, but also pieces from the Hokuriku, Kanto, and Tohoku regions, indicating that exchanges were occurring with these areas. As the home of obsidian, Nagawa clearly played the role of a cultural exchange crossroads. While viewing first-hand a varied and diverse collection of real Jomon pottery, up to 80 visitors at a time can also join a Jomon pottery-making workshop.
