Takayama site cluster

Historic Site/Japan Heritage
A cluster of sites from the Paleolithic age fan out in the basin of the Takayama River that flows directly under the Hoshikuso Pass obsidian mine. These sites seem to have been a group of factories where the abundant raw obsidian was processed and dispatched around the country. Stone tools excavated from the Takayama site and a reproduction of the site itself are on display at the Obsidian Museum of Archaeology situated in the site cluster. This display gives us a clear understanding of the entire obsidian industry, from how the raw obsidian was mined and processed, to how it was distributed to distant areas for use.
