Takayama Paleolithic Obsidian Workshop Sites
Historic Site/Japan Heritage
Paleolithic Obsidian Workshop Sites are located across the basin of the Takayama River that flows directly under the Hoshikuso Pass Obsidian Mines. Local historian Kodama Shinobu discovered these sites in 1955. A large number of academic and rescue excavation projects have subsequently been conducted and revealed how people of the Paleolithic Period mined raw obsidian, made stone tools from obsidian, and distributed them across distant areas.
