Artifacts of Enokigaito site
Cultural Heritage/Japan Heritage
One of the masterpieces of Enokigaito site is a pottery vessel with a human face decoration attached to the rim from the Middle Jomon Period (c. 3,500?2,500 BC). From the opposite edge of the rim to the vessel’s body, this pottery has a pattern that appears like a snake. Based on an iconographic interpretation, the human face decoration symbolizes a female and the snake pattern a male. The masterpiece was designated Nagano Prefectural Treasure in 2018.
