Artifacts of Tsugane-goshomae site
Cultural Heritage/Japan Heritage
The highlight of Tsugane-goshomae site, from the Middle Jomon Period (c. 3,500?2,500 BC), is a large pottery vessel (H: 56cm) with two human face decorations; one is attached to the rim, another one on the side of the vessel. The nickname of the vessel is “childbirth pottery” (shussan-mon doki) based on the interpretation of the pot as a representation of a human body. The iconography interprets the human face decoration on the rim as the mother and the one on the body as a baby during childbirth. This vessel is a designated Yamanashi Prefecture Cultural Property.
